i think you have the(1st) r.l of the cutting area at some particular distance and also other(2nd) r.l is given to u. take the difference of r.l and add this difference in the reading which comes on the 2nd r.l
now put the staff on the cutting area and take the reading which comes by the addition of two. if any quary pls ask.

Amount if Cut and Fill is calculated in volume. You have to find the dimensions like height, width and length and then you can find the volume. The Height can be found by reduced level method or a few more and length and width can be found by measuring tape, chain or electrical equipment like total station. This is usually a rough estimate......
