About: Vincent T. H. CHU (朱敦瀚) is renowned internationally as walking encyclopedia of civil engineering. He is the recipient of the Ombudsman’s Award 2007 under complaint-related category and Young Engineer of the Year Award 2008 (Merit) organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He is the author of the monthly column “The Civil FAQ” in the Hong Kong Engineer published by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and is the author of the civil engineering monthly columns “The Civil Q&A” and “The Civil Corner” on the websites on World Federation of Engineering Organization and the University of Science and Technology (American Society of Civil Engineers – International Student Group) respectively. Vincent Chu is the author of five internationally popular civil engineering books, namely “200 Questions and Answers on Practical Civil Engineering Work” , “Civil Engineering Practical Notes A-Z”, “Ask Vincent Chu (Common FAQ on Practical Civil Engineering Works)”, “The Underlying Reasons in Practical Civil Engineering Works” and “A Closer Look at Prevailing Civil Engineering Practice – What, Why and How” which entail a list of useful practical experience, Q&As and knowledge that engineers should acquire. The five books were written within 5 years (2005-2009) and they obtained overwhelming good comments from engineers around the world. They are the “must-read” engineering books of a civil engineer. Overwhelmed by easy-to-read style, the wide spectrum of engineering knowledge and very useful information contained in the books, about 30 engineering societies, universities and organizations around the world offered to post the books on their websites for their member’s reference. About 20 engineering societies, universities and organizations around the world offered to recommend the books to their members. what is roller compacted concrete ?

Roller-compacted concrete derives its name from the construction method which is used to construct it. It's placed with conventional asphalt paving equipment,then compacted with rollers.

Roller-compacted concrete has the same basic components as conventional concrete: cement, water, and aggregates, such as gravel or crushed stone.

However, unlike conventional concrete mix, it's much drier and usually stiff enough to be compacted by vibratory rollers. Typically, roller-compacted concrete is constructed without joints. It needs neither forms nor finishing, nor does it contain dowel bars or steel reinforcement.

These characteristics make roller-compacted concrete simple, fast, and economical.

It depends if the timber is hardwood and softwood.

Typical value of tensile strength parallel to grain = 60MPa

Typical value of tensile strength perpendicular to grain = 0.5MPa

There are two common methods to work out the percentage of work progress:

If the cross section of box culvert is quite uniform along its length, the work progress could be worked out by calculating length of box culvert completed over teh total length of box culvert.
If the cross section of box culvert varies significantly along its length, you may monitor works progress by using volume of concrete poured against total volume of box culvert.

Determine moments at critical sections in each direction, normally the negative moments at supports and positive moment near mid-span.
Distribute moments transverse at critical sections to column and middle-strip and if beams are used in the column strip, distribute column strip moments between slab and beam.
Determine the area of steel required in the slab at critical sections for column and middle strips.
Select reinforcing bars for the slab and concentrate bars near the column, if necessary.
